The rise in urban living has led to increased demand for compact and versatile furniture. The Heli X, designed by Helen Sauter, is a response to this trend. Inspired by her personal experiences of living in a small apartment, Sauter has created a furniture system that provides flexibility, tidiness, and a homelike atmosphere in a limited space.
The Heli X stands out for its unique properties. This multifunctional furniture system offers a wide range of flexibility. The elements can be stacked to build a shelf or used as a low table. Each cube can also function as a simple seating accommodation. When not in use, the Heli X system can be piled up, requiring minimal space.
The design realization of the Heli X involves a combination of stainless steel and anodized aluminium. The stainless steel was sawed, milled, and later welded, while the aluminium pieces were bent on a folding machine and then anodized. The entire object was built by Sauter herself, reflecting her dedication and craftsmanship.
The Heli X is not just functional, but also interactive. The modular system is easy to use and rebuild. The elements can be stacked on top of each other to build a shelf, or placed next to each other to form a table. A single element with a colored sheet on top can serve as a chair. This versatility makes the Heli X a perfect solution for small spaces.
The Heli X project started in November 2021 in Hanau, Germany, and was completed in January 2022. It was part of the exhibition 'Arbeit im Prozess' at the 'Deutsche Goldschmiede Haus' in Hanau from April to June 2022. The design was awarded Silver in the A' Furniture Design Award in 2022, a testament to its outstanding expertise and innovation.
In conclusion, the Heli X by Helen Sauter is a remarkable design that addresses the challenges of small space living. Its unique properties, functionality, and interactive nature make it a deserving winner of the Silver A' Furniture Design Award. The Heli X is a shining example of how design can transform the way we live and interact with our environment.
